Reviewing work & Developing Outcomes

I have decided to write a works journal to keep track of my work progress to ensure that I keep to schedule and meet my deadline.

Production Weeks Works Journal
Week 1 -
Production of currency

Planning of the coin -

I started to produce the currency of the kingdom, this conceited of 3 coins and 2 valuable bars. When I was experimenting with making these assets I inset the coin face and then with then extruded tool I set it back in slightly so that it looked similar to a 50p Peace. After consulting with my peers, one of them pointed out an easier way of doing this but using less pollys this method included using normal mapping.

Jason and I decided to create 3 coins rather then to create 3 coins and 2 valuable bars. We decided this because this area of the town wouldn't be a rich as some other part and is just a small trading market, we wanted to add some normality to the town as the village itself will look quite medieval we didn't want the audience to think it was set in that time period. We asked our peers for their opinion and they agreed it would give the wrong impression of the setting and time period.
Jason stated that the coins would be made of mithril and gold, I researched and looked into Mithril as I have only even seen this metal in the game of Work of War Craft and wanted to get a better understanding of this matiral before I recreated it. Mithril can be found in the lord of the rings books, it states that it is a shiny silver metal stronger then steel and much lighter. I also found that with this metal it is often associated with the colour blue, for example
Runescape -
World of Warcraft -

Both these games are MMORPG, this type of game is what ours would be if we where to develop it further. This is why I decided to also pet-ray mithril as blue also however the darker the blue the more valuable the coin is.

Research on normal mapping
Normal mapping can be described as "faking" high resolution details and mapping them onto a low resolution mesh. The pixels that make up a normal map store information that describes the surface of the mesh. This can give the illution that there is a curvature to the model without the use of adding more pollys (very important when modelling for games) The greed, red and blue channels of a normal control the direction of the pixels normal.
Example of a normal map -

This is the tutorial I used to help me in the process of making normal maps for my coins. Incase the vido above doesn't work, i have provided a link bellow.

Along with my peers this helped me to create a normal map and understand the process better and the different normals I can create.
This is my end result

This coin is gold and Mithril.
